The present work – an original lithograph printed between 1969 and 1972 entitled Francis Terrace, Salford – was produced after a pencil drawing created by L.S. Lowry over a decade earlier in 1956. Francis Terrace was a self-contained street that was built in the 1850s, and was demolished in 1959. As such, this scene essentially acts as a historical record of the location. The original drawing is now housed in the permanent collection of The Lowry museum in Salford. A few years after Lowry completed this drawing, he was commissioned by Ted Frape, Head Curator of the Salford Art Gallery, to continue his project of recording the streets surrounding the gallery before they underwent redevelopment.
